Khajuraho Festival
Khajuraho Festival is held in Khajuraho, Bundalkhand in Madhya Pradesh at the Western Group of temples in Khajuraho during 25th February to 3rd March every year.Every spring the stones sculptures of Khajuraho regain life during the prestigious 7-day Khajuraho Dance Festival when the glory of the temples is celebrated with true joy and enthusiasm. Khajuraho Dance Festival is a weeklong dance festival and is held during the months of February and March in Khajuraho. This cultural extravaganza is conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department and is promoted as one of the major cultural event in Khajuraho. This cultural event is staged at an open-air auditorium in front of the Chitragupta Temple. The Chitragupta temple was built thousands of years ago and is dedicated to Surya Bhagwan (the Sun God). Apart from the Chitragupta temples, the Khajuraho Dance festival is also organised at the Vishwanatha Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Khajuraho Dance Festival is a comparatively a newly launched dance festival and was first organised in the year 2002. Although this festival is just few years old, it has earned a great deal of reputation among locals and foreigners. The dances performed here are truly divine with the wonderful backdrop of the sculptures of Khajuraho. The temples are brightly lit and decorated and the entire atmosphere dazzles with the lights during this period.
Generally, all the traditional Indian dance forms are presented here by many renowned and well know artists and dancers. The dances that are displayed here are that of Kathak, Odissi, Kathakali, Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi and Manipuri. The best in these dances are specially invited for performing their art here. The artists are honoured for their performances and it is a truly cultural delight for the lovers and admirers of these ancient art & dance forms.
Reaching Khajuraho -
The access to Khajuraho is by air, rail and road. Khajuraho is 395km from Agra, 117 km from Satna, 175 km from Jhansi, 350 km from Bhopal, 280 km from Gwalior, 480 km from Indore, 210 km from Jabalpur.- Air : There are regular flights linking Khajuraho with Delhi (35 minutes), Agra(40 minutes), and Varanasi(45 minutes).
- Rail : There is no direct train to Khajuraho. The most convenient station is Jhansi(175km), which is linked to Delhi and other major northern cities. Satna(117km) is another convenient railway head for those coming from Mumbai, Calcutta and Varanasi.
- Road : Khajuraho is connected by regular buses with Satna, Harpalpur(94km), Jhansi and Mahoba(61km).
